Every fall, a wave of e-bikes migrates to the back of the garage and hibernates until April. It doesn't have to be that way. With the right setup, an e-bike is a legitimately great winter vehicle — you're rolling past a line of cars still defrosting their windshields — and with the right storage habits, even a parked e-bike comes out of winter healthy instead of half-ruined. Inside every e-bike battery, lithium ions shuttle between electrodes through a liquid electrolyte. Cold thickens that electrolyte and slows the chemical reactions that produce current. The practical result: internal resistance climbs, voltage sags under load, and the battery management system — which cuts power when voltage drops too low — hits its cutoff earlier than it would on a warm day. Your pack didn't shrink; it just can't deliver as much of its stored energy while it's cold.
Expect real-world consequences. In freezing temperatures, losing somewhere between 15 and 40 percent of your usual range is normal, with the deeper losses on the coldest days and on batteries that started the ride already cold. The good news is that the loss is temporary — capacity returns as the pack warms back up. You just have to plan around it.
Charging is where cold crosses from inconvenient into genuinely risky. Charging a lithium battery below freezing can cause lithium plating: metallic lithium deposits on the anode instead of slotting neatly into it. That damage is permanent, it eats capacity, and in the worst case it can create internal shorts — a safety problem, not just a range problem. The rule is simple and non-negotiable: never charge a cold-soaked battery. Bring it indoors, give it an hour to reach room temperature, then plug in.
Ride Planning When It's Cold
A few habits keep winter range predictable instead of alarming:
- Store the battery indoors, always. Keep the pack at room temperature and click it onto the bike right before you roll out. A warm battery at the start preserves meaningful range compared to one that spent the night in a freezing garage.
- Carry a bigger buffer. Don't plan rides that land home at 5 percent in January. Cold-weather voltage sag can shut a pack down earlier than the gauge suggests, so treat 20 percent as empty.
- Ride a lower assist level. Dropping one level of assist stretches range more than any other free trick — and pedaling harder keeps you warmer anyway.
- Shorten the loop. Ride to the coffee shop one town closer. It still counts.
Charging Safety, Especially in Winter
Winter moves all your charging indoors, which makes this the season to tighten habits. Use the charger your manufacturer supplied, or an exact-spec replacement — voltage, connector, and amperage all have to match. None of this is paranoia. It's how you get all of the convenience of an e-bike with none of the headlines.
Set the Bike Up for Winter Roads
Fenders are transformative. Winter riding is mostly wet-road riding, and full-coverage fenders keep freezing spray off your body and road salt off your drivetrain. If you make one hardware change for winter, make it this one.
Light up like it's your job. Sunset lands in the mid-afternoon, and drivers are peering through fogged windshields with the low sun in their eyes. Run lights on every ride, day or night. Tires, Pressure, and Ice
Traction is the difference between winter riding feeling adventurous and feeling frightening, and most of it comes down to rubber.
- Drop your pressure. Lower pressure widens the contact patch and lets the tire conform to packed snow instead of skating over it. Stay above the minimum printed on the sidewall, but live at the low end of the range when it's slick.
- Fat tires earn their keep now. If your bike takes fat tires, winter is their season. And if your current rubber is worn smooth, a fresh aggressive tread — like Mohegia's e-bike-rated fat mountain tires — restores real bite on snow-packed streets. Match the size printed on your existing sidewall when you order.
- Respect ice. Knobby tread helps in snow; nothing except studded tires helps on true ice. Know the difference, and treat shaded bridges, painted lane markings, and metal plates as no-lean zones — black ice forms there first.
- Brake early and gently. Stopping distances stretch on cold, wet pavement, and e-bikes carry more mass and speed than conventional bikes. Ease into both brakes well before the intersection and keep your weight back. At e-bike speeds, the smooth rider is the safe rider.
Keep Your Hands Working
Numb fingers can't feather a brake lever, which makes cold hands a genuine safety issue rather than a comfort complaint. Battery first — this is the part people get wrong. Lithium packs stored at 100 percent age faster than they should; packs left near empty can self-discharge below recoverable voltage and die outright. The sweet spot for storage is a 40 to 60 percent charge. Get the pack into that band, then:
- Remove the battery from the bike (if your manufacturer's manual allows it) and store it indoors — somewhere cool, dry, out of direct sun, and away from anything flammable. Not the freezing garage, and not the shelf above the radiator.
- Check it every four to six weeks and top it back into the 40-60 band if it has drifted down.
- Never leave it sitting on the charger all season.
Then the bike. Wash it, dry it completely, and lube the chain. Inflate the tires to full pressure — or hang the bike — so months of sitting don't flat-spot the rubber. Store it somewhere dry, since humidity is the quiet killer of parked bikes, and throw a cover over it if it lives next to a dusty workbench.
Spring wake-up: charge the battery fully, check tire pressure and brake function, snug the important bolts, and make the first ride a lap around the block rather than the big descent.
The Winter Rider's Checklist
- Battery sleeps indoors; install it right before rollout
- Never charge below freezing — room temperature first, always
- Lights on every ride, rear flash even at noon
